What does a treatment involve?

Freddy's skin improved after acupuncture and he is now able to relax more easily. Here he is relaxing in the surgery. A detailed examination of the animal is carried out on the first appointment at the centre. Questions about the animal's current problem, previous medical history and diet are also asked.

Acupuncture needles are then inserted into the animal's body. Treatments may last from one minute to thirty minutes depending on the condition being treated and the method of treatment being employed. There are many ways of stimulating acupuncture points including needles, aquapuncture (injections), electro-acupuncture and moxibustion (gentle heating of the point).

The average number of treatment is about six and the treatments are usually on a once weekly basis. Chronic conditions may require checkups at varying time intervals. Occasionally no improvement at all is seen with acupuncture. If this is the case after three sessions it is unlikely that acupuncture will have any effect and treatment will be discontinued.
